After studying the settlement history of Texas, and of the country in general, the need for a Hessian monument was recognised.

Background

Mexico ceded Texas to the USA on condition that the land was to be urbanised and settlements established within a certain period of time. In order for Texas not to be given back to Mexico, European emigrants had to be recruited to fulfil this condition.

The Hessians represented the largest population group of the then German Confederation and who came to Texas in the middle of the 19th century. A specially founded Texas association in Biebrich in Hessen-Darmstadt arranged the crossing (the one-way ticket was cheaper than to take care of the welfare cases and one was rid of the people). Inclement weather and other difficulties led to high casualties in the early years of settlement. After studying the settlement history of Texas, and of the country in general, the need for a Hessian monument was recognised.

Unfortunately, this monument could not be built – and objects were instead contributed to set up an imaginary museum. In this context, the individual objects presented as relics can also be regarded as entirely independent.

Hessendenkmal (Hessian monument) was a contribution to LOBO MOTION – 3 days of art and music held in Lobo, Texas. For more information on Lobo, see www.lobo-texas.com.
